MUDDY WATTERS, WINTERLAND 1974
I have been a photographer since High School, but my passion for photographing musicians started after I returned from my tour of duty in Vietnam in 1969.  When I came back to the US, the once underground music scene was blossoming.  Living so close  to Ground Zero of the counterculture, San Francisco, I was able to shoot all of the great acts that came to The City as well as my hometown of Sacramento...  I shot at some of the legendary San Francisco venues like Winterland, the Original Fillmore, The Keystones, and every other SF club you have ever heard about.   I shot every band in every music venue in Sacramento including Sam's Hof Brau, The Sacramento Blues Festivals,  Memorial Auditorium, Club Can't Tell and every place music was being played from 1967 until 1994.

I was there, with my camera.

I wasn't there for just the photo though, nor did I think I had anything of particular value when I was photographing artists and bands.  I was there for the music.  The photography was an adjunct to seeing live music.  Of course, after time I did realize that I was chronicling a history, a history of the time in music... and that very few people were doing it.  Early on in my career,  there were no camera passes, rules or nothing, so it was free reign mostly.  Sometimes artists would get upset if i was using flash (back in the old days you had to, the lights were pretty bad) but mostly they didn't care.    So passes, while nice to have, were not the way I captured my images.

I did it from the  front row.

I moved to Colorado in 1993, but have continued on in my photography career. Now retired, I am able to see more, shoot more and do more in the world of my photography.
best of all is I am constantly discovering some amazing photos that I haven't seen in a long time.  Some not since I processed the roll of film in my dark room at home on P St in Sacramento...

Over the years I have managed to photograph some of music history's most important players in every genre of music.. From Country artists,Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson to hard rock and metal artists like Van Halen (or Van Hagar, if you prefer)  AC/DC (with  Bon Scott and Brian Johnson) and KISS.  .My work also encompasses many blues artists including Muddy Watters, Freddie, Albert and BB King to modern day artists like Joe Bonnamassa Derek Trucks, String Cheese Incident, Phish and the Dave Matthews Band..

Enjoy the images, they were all shot with love, from the front row.

Be sure to keep checking back, this site will continue to grow and offer new and exciting photos for your amazement.
