HAPPY NEW YEAR! 12-31-78 11:59.58... The Closing Of Winterland with Bill Graham, as per tradition, dressed as Father Time. Bittersweet this, the incredible joy of being at a New year's Dead show, but also the realization that I was never going to set foot in my rock and roll, and photographic, home ever again. The Night started out with an amazing set by old time Dead favorites, The New Riders of The Purple Sage who were followed by John Belushi and Dan Akroyd and the rest of The Blues Brothers! The Grateful Dead played until 7 a. m and afterward everyone enjoyed Breakfast. As I walked out of Winterland into splintered sunlight I knew that an era was over. never again would any one place be home not only for me and the crowd, but for the bands too. It was over for the culture that lived inside those walls and on the streets outside too..

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! Oakland Auditorium (later the Kaiser Center) 12-3-1-82The Grateful dead with Etta James and the baddest ass horn section in the world, Tower of Power. I thought Etta was going show Bobby what it was all about.
I have listened to Jerry perform 'Morning Dew' a bunch of times. This image of Jerry was from the "last 5 nights" in October 1974 at Winterland. Most Deadheads know exactly where the photo I took was taken. This is from the 2nd night. I was front and center about 15 ft back from the stage. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Photo by Larry Hulst
It's 4:15 A.M. January 1, 1970. The Audience at Winterland has been Rockin for 8 hrs.and up next is Hot Tuna. Finally some guitar playin w/ Bobby on rhythm, since he was standing around waiting to play the last set ending the show around 7 that morning. This was a $10.00 show maybe.
Happy Birthday Jorma Kaukonen, guitarist for Hot Tuna and the Jefferson Airplane.
It was the quiet moments when Billy was done beating the hell out of his drums, and Jerry just steps into the light and solos until eternity, That makes me say "There is nothing like a Grateful Dead show'. Winterland October 1974.
